“For even I, the Son of Man, came here not to be served but
to serve others, and to give my life as a ransom for many.”
Matthew 20:28
We are to be servants of the
living God. This means that we are to perform any tasks for Him that He directs
us to, just like Jesus continually did. We are to do this enthusiastically.
Romans 12:11 says “Never be lazy in your work, but serve the Lord
enthusiastically.” We are also to serve others in love. Galatians 5:13 says “For
you have been called to live in freedom—not freedom to satisfy your sinful
nature, but freedom to serve one another in love.” It goes on to say in
Galatians 5:14 “For the whole law can be summed up in this one command: ‘Love
your neighbor as yourself.’” Deciding to make life’s mission to serve others in
love means that we are to help meet their needs. We can do this for those that
live under our own roofs, those that are part of our church, those that live near us, those that are a part
of our community, and those that are a part of our world. Jesus was and is
Lord. And He came to serve, not to be served. He also gave His life as a ransom
for many. May we be willing to do this too.
Father, Give us a servant’s heart.
Give us a heart that wants to serve You enthusiastically. Give us a heart that
wants to serve others in love. Even Your Son came not to be served but to serve
others, and to give his life as a ransom for many. Guide and direct our hearts
so that we will make it our mission do this each and every day. All to the
glory of You. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
